Dragan Vergovski-Alpi – Retrospective exhibition

Dragan Vergovski-Alpi was born in Belgrade in 1950. He is a prominent consultant and conservator, whose artistic journey was indelibly shaped by his mentors and different styles of contemporary art.
His days as a pupil and a student were marked by his extensive education, beginning with his secondary school education at the School of Art in Skopje, mentored by professor Dimo Todorovski, where Vergovski polished his skills as an artist and developed profound understanding of the complexity of artistic expression.
Vergovski continued on his journey to study art at the Faculty of Education mentored by Professor Borko Lazeski. Guided by his mentor Lazeski, Vergovski studied and gained a deeper understanding of the theoretical foundations of art, researching the concepts of shapes, colour and composition which would later significantly influence his artistic endeavours.
Vergovski’s artistic vision, combined with his days as a student and previous experiences truly blossomed during his time at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje, under the mentorship of Professor Dimitar Kondovski. Kondovski’s guidance and mentorship ensured that he would acquire the technical expertise but it also ingrained in Vergovski a profound sense of artistic integrity and innovation. At that point, Vergovski ventured to explore different contemporary art styles, including impressionism, expressionism, surrealism, informalism, geometric abstract and so on; each style had made its mark on his developing artistic identity with its different characteristic elements.
Once he found his feet on his journey as an artist, Vergovski became а frequent exhibitor, and has been displaying his work independently since 1968, with an important exhibition at the Youth Work Action “New Belgrade”. His exhibitions have garnered numerous accolades on national and international level, recognising his versatility and proficiency of various artistic genres.
Vergovski’s contribution through his exhibitions has enriched the world of art and additionally has contributed towards the preservation of the Macedonian cultural heritage. Vergovski has been active for more than 40 years as a consultant conservator specialising in mosaics at the Conservation Centre Skopje, and he has played a key role in the preservation and protection of the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Macedonia.
The opus of Dragan Vergovski includes many isms, that is to say various artistic movements of modern and post-modern art and their eclectic connection; he doesn’t strictly adhere to a certain movement, but instead he incorporates several movements in one piece. The division of several artistic cycles can be observed through the thematic concepts more so than through modernist artistic styles that are not in chronological order, but rather extend through his entire opus, depending on personal feelings and emotions.
